Alonsoa warscewiczii is the only species of this Peruvian genus grown in
the United States, though several cultivars have been developed from it.
A compact bushy plant reaching 1-3 ft (30-90 cm) high, it has glossy
dark green oval leaves and red stems. The scarlet flowers with yellow
centers appear from midsummer to midfall, adding color to formal beds,
borders, and containers. The plants are tender perennials but flower
like annuals in their first year from seed.
Popular species and cultivars
'Compacta,' 11/2-2 ft (45-60 cm) high, has scarlet blooms.
'Firestone Jewels Hybrids,' to 1 ft (30 cm) , come in mixes of pink,
red, amber, and pure white, and are excellent for cutting.
