Scarlet pimpernel (Anagallis arvensis) is also called poor-man's
weatherglass because its small scarlet flowers close on cloudy days. A
weed in Europe, it makes a fine garden plant here. The plants reach only
1-2 in (2.5-5 cm) high and form thick, bushy clumps with a spread of 10
in (25 cm), excellent for edging borders or growing in rock gardens. The
popular variety caerulea produces a mass of rich gentian-blue starlike
flowers from midsummer to midfall; mixed seed packs will also include
redflowered plants.
