Annual woodruff (Asperula orientalis) is the only hardy annual in this genus of 200 species - all other woodruffs are perennials. Its strongly scented pale blue flowers appear in midsummer on top of 1 ft (30 cm) tall stems clothed with narrow green lanceshaped leaves. The leaves are arranged in attractive whorls up the stems. This plant is useful for garden decoration as, unlike most annuals, it tolerates partial shade and likes moist soil. With its compact habit, it is also suitable for rock gardens. The flowers are good for cutting.
