The cultivars of Atriplex hortensis are grown for their deep crimson-purple leaves covered, when young, with fine, glistening white powder. The flowers are insignificant. the cultivar 'Rubra' has bright blood-red foliage. In rich soil, orach rapidly grows to 3-4 ft (90-120 cm) high, so use it as an instant hedge or simply to fill an awkward gap at the back of an ornamental border.
