Cynoglossum
hound's tongue
Height 11/2-2 ft (45-60
cm)
Planting distance 1 ft (30 cm)
Flowers spring or mid- to late summer
Well-drained fertile soil
Sunny or partially shaded site
Hardy annual or biennial
Sometimes known as Chinese forget-me-not, Cynoglossum amabile produces
flowers in greater profusion than the ordinary forget-me-not. The
tongue-shaped leaves are gray-green and downy. Although a true biennial,
hound's tongue will flower in the same year it was started from seed,
raising its sprays of turquoise-blue flowers on slender stems above the
bushy foliage. The cultivar 'Blue Showers' has sky-blue flowers. Hound's
tongue is suitable for growing in annual and mixed borders, as edging to
semiwild areas, and in containers. The flowers last well in water.
