Emilia
tassel flower
- Height 11/2-2 ft (45-60
cm)
- Planting distance 10 in (25 cm)
- Flowers early to late summer
- Well-drained garden soil
- Sunny site
- Half-hardy annual
Tassel flowers are excellent half-hardy annuals for providing a splash
of orange, scarlet, and gold in sunny, dry borders in seaside gardens.
Their tassellike flowers, carried on wiry stems throughout the summer,
look most effective planted in mixed bedding displays, though they also
make excellent subjects for containers, and as cut flowers they are
long-lasting in water. Only one species, Emilia javanica, is grown in
the United States. It reaches up to 11/2-2 ft (45-60 cm) high. Mixed
seed selections with orange and gold flowers are available.
