Globe amaranths grow wild in India; in North America they thrive in
areas with hot, humid summers, making them one of the best annuals for
the Deep South. One species and its cultivars are generally grown.
Botanically known as Gomphrena globosa, it bears cloverlike flowers in
bright orange, yellow, purple, pink, and white, with hairy, light green
leaves. The 1 ft (30 cm) high stems are upright. The flowers last well
and are excellent as dried flowers. In the garden use them in beds.
Popular species and cultivars
Single and mixed color strains are available.
'Buddy Hybrids' are compact dwarf forms that reach a height of 6 in (15
cm). Their flowers are a vivid deep purple.
'Full Mix' is a mixture with orange, purple, pink, red, lavender, or
white flowers, also available as single colors. The plants grow up to
11/2-2 ft ( 45-60 cm) high.
