Easy to grow and generous with their white and pink flowers, candytufts
are popular annuals. As they tolerate smoke and dirt, they are a good
choice for urban gardens, where they can be grown in borders and rock
gardens, for decoration, or for cutting. Two species and their cultivars
are found in gardens.
Popular species and cultivars
Iberis amara (syn. I. coronaria), commonly known as rocket candytuft, is
an upright plant that reaches 15 in (38 cm) high, its fragrant flowers
are excellent for cutting and border decoration. Iberis umbellata is a
spreading plant (6-15 in/15-38 cm high) with compact clusters of white,
pink, and lavender flowers. Popular cultivars include 'Cream Flash'
(9-12 in/23-30 cm high; creamy white flowers), 'Dwarf Fairy' (10 in/25cm
high; pink, red, maroon, white, and lavender flowers), 'Pinnacle' (15-18
in/38-40 cm high; pure white, dense and fragrant flowers), and 'Red
Flash' (15 in/38 cm high; carmine flowers).
