Kochia
burning bush, summer cypress
- Height 2-5 ft (60-150
cm)
- Planting distance 2-3 ft (60-90 cm)
- Foliage plant
- Ordinary well-drained soil
- Open, sunny site
- Half-hardy annual
Untidy forms of this intriguing foliage plant grow in the wild from
southern Europe to Japan - and many Europeans regard it as a weed. But
in gardens in North America summer cypress is grown as a half-hardy
annual, its mass of pale green foliage providing relief in beds of
brightly colored flowering annuals. The most commonly grown variety is
Kochia scoparia trichophylla (now reclassified as Bassia scoparia
tricophylla). This forms a neat, symmetrical dome and gradually turns a
rich crimson-purple in fall, giving it the name "burning bush."
