Leptosiphon
leptosiphon
- Height 4-6 in (10-15 cm)
- Planting distance 3-4 in (7.5-10 cm)
- Flowers early summer to early fall
- Ordinary well-drained soil
- Sunny site
- Hardy annual
Often classified as Linanthus grandiflorus or Gilia grandiflora, this
plant is a gem by any name. Those who encounter the hybrids of this
unjustly neglected annual are enchanted by them. The tiny flowers are
scattered in profusion over the plant and come in a random collection of
pink, red, orange, yellow, cream, and white. They appear from early
summer to early fall on straight slender stems above finely divided deep
green foliage, which forms mounds 4-6 in (10-15 cm) high. Use
leptosiphon hybrids to edge borders or to cheer up earth-filled cracks
in paving or small pockets of soil between rocks or stones. They are
also suitable for growing in window boxes and other shallow containers.
'Stardust Hybrids Mixed' is the mixture most commonly sold in garden
centers or found in mail-order catalogs.
