Moroccan toadflax (Linaria maroccana) is a narrow upright plant some
9-24 in (23-60 cm) high, with slender light green leaves. It bears
spikes of narrow tubular flowers, resembling miniature snapdragons,
which can be bright yellow, red, pink, or mauve, of ten blotched with
white. Flowering throughout the summer in regions such as the Pacific
Northwest, where summers are cool, toadflax blooms in late spring to
early summer or winter where summers are hot. It is suitable for annual
and mixed borders, rock gardens, and edging a path. For best effect,
grow in groups of five or seven plants.
Popular species and cultivars
The following cultivars have been developed from the species Linaria
maroccana.
'Fairy Bouquet' is a seed mixture producing compact plants reaching just
9 in (23 cm) high. The flowers come in shades of red, pink, purple,
yellow, and cream, all with white throats. This is a particularly easy
toadflax to grow.
'Northern Lights' reaches 2 ft (60 cm) high and has flower in shades of
bronze, red, purple, pink, yellow, and cream. Some of the flowers are
bicolored.
