Although Lunaria annua (syn. L. biennis) can be grown as an annual, it is naturally a biennial and, treated as such, produces finer flowers. These are borne in loose, fragrant clusters from midspring to early summer. The true species has pale lavender flowers; the cultivars range from white to rich purple and red. In summer silvery white seed pods follow the flowers and can be used for indoor display.

Popular species and cultivars
'Mixed' has rich purple or purple-red flowers that are sometimes marked with white, as well as pure white ones.
'Stella' bears pure white flowers and foliage strongly variegated with creamy white.
