Lupinus
lupine
- Height 11/2 ft (45 cm)
- Planting distance 8-10 in (20-25 cm)
- Flowers midsummer to midfall
- Acid to neutral, well-drained soil
- Sun or partial shade
- Hardy annual
To most people, lupines are the perennial Russell lupines, but a few
annual types are also grown. Lupinus nanus, the best known of these, is
generally available only in its 11/2 ft (45 cm) high dwarf form 'Pixie
Delight.' This is a mixed strain, whose flowers may be white, pink, red,
lavender, purple, blue, or bicolored. 'Pixie Delight' has colorful
spikes, which appear from midsummer to midfall, persisting long after
perennial lupines have faded. Carried on bushy plants with leaves
divided into soft, hairy green leaflets, they are excellent for
producing a band of color at medium height in a mixed border. But they
also look effective when grown on their own in a mass or in containers
on the patio.
