Malcomia
Virginia stock

- Height 1 ft (30 cm)
- Planting distance 3 in
- Flowers midspring to fall
- Ordinary well-drained soil
- Sunny site
- Hardy annual

The flowers of Malcolmia maritima, an easily grown 1 ft (30 cm) high hardy annual, have a delightfully old-fashioned look. The little cross-shaped blooms come in white, pink, red, lavender, and purple (usually sold as a mixture) and have a sweet scent. If sown in succession from early spring to midsummer, where summers are mild, they will produce flowers from midspring to fall. Expect flowering to begin 4 weeks after sowing and to continue for 6-8 weeks. Where summers are hot, treat Virginia stock as a midspring to early-summer flower.
