Mentzelia lindleyi, sometimes called Bartonia aurea, is a robust, freely
branching, slightly sprawling annual some 2 ft (60 cm) high. Best
adapted to mild, dry climates, it will bloom from mid- to late summer in
cooler regions and in the winter in the Southwest. It produces a long
succession of fragrant brilliant yellow flowers that open from
gracefully pointed buds into flowers, each composed of five broad petals
arranged around a mass of slender golden stamens. The small, narrow
leaves are rich green and set on succulent stems. A California native,
this annual should be grown in full sun. If the weather becomes cloudy
and cool, the flowers may fail to open properly. However, the plant
stands up well in wind.
