- Planting distance 1 ft (30 cm)
- Flowers midsummer to early fall
- Light, moderately rich soil
- Sheltered, sunny site
- Tender perennial grown as tender annual
Marvel of Peru, or four o'clock (Mirabilis jalapa), has fragrant
trumpet-shaped flowers in yellow, red, crimson, rose-pink, or white,
often striped, veined, or mottled with contrasting colors. These usually
open from mid- to late afternoon and fade the following morning, though
in cool, cloudy weather they open earlier and stay fresh longer the
following day. Appearing from midsummer to early fall, the blooms are
carried on erect 2-3 ft (60-90 cm) high plants and are set against a
foil of heart-shaped midgreen leaves. The plants look best growing in
clumps in sunny borders.
