cupflower

- Height 6-15 in (15-38 cm)
- Planting distance 8 in (20 cm)
- Flowers early summer to early fall
- Moist but well-drained soil
- Sunny, sheltered site
- Tender perennial grown as half-hardy annual

Although a perennial, Nierembergia hippomanica violacea is a tender and usually treated as an annual. Its fine green foliage forms neat mounds, which become covered with small pale lavender flowers with yellow throats from early summer to early fall. 'Mont Blanc' is smothered with glistening white flowers; 'Purple Robe' has deep violet flowers. Cupflower looks most effective as edging to beds and borders, and it may be used in containers and hanging baskets.
