Scotch, or cotton, thistle (Onopordum acanthium) is an excellent specimen plant in a border, large shrubbery, or wild garden. Its dramatic foliage - broad silver-gray spiny leaves - is covered with white cobweblike hairs. Purple thistlelike flowers appear from mid- to late summer.
