Popular species and cultivars
There are two principal groups of petunias.
Grandflora cultivars have a slightly trailing habit and large, showy blooms; some are double. While a few are weather resistant, most are not and need a sheltered spot.
'Blue Picotee' has deep violet-blue flowers with wavy petals edged with pure white.
'Super Cascade Hybrids' are resistant to heat and drought and bear large, rain-proof flowers in white, blue, pink, red and salmon.
'Daddy Hybrids' have large burgundy, mauve, and pink, flowers with distinct dark veining.
'Picotee Hybrids' have blooms in plum-purple, deep blue, scarlet, or rose, all edged with white.
'Razzle Dazzle Hybrids' have red, rose, and deep flowers striped white.
'Strawberry Tart,' up to 11/2 ft (45 cm), has double, ruffled blooms in cerise-red marked with white.
'Ultra Star Hybrids' offer compact, disease-resistant plants that bloom early, bearing large rain-resistant flowers in blue and red with a white star.
Multiflora cultivars are bushy plants with numerous small flowers and are weather resistant.
'Carpet Hybrids' produce low, spreading plants, only 8 in (20 cm) high, with pink, rose, red, plum, blue, and white flowers.
'Delight Hybrids' produce rich double blooms, 21/2 in (6 cm) wide, in white, salmon, pink, red, and blue, on 1 ft (30 cm) tall plants.
'Primetime Hybrids' are compact uniform plants, ideal for bedding displays. The flowers come in 15 different shades, including bicolors starred with white.
'Summer Sun' has rare, true yellow flowers 21/2 in (6 cm) wide on 9 in (23 cm) tall plants.
