Phacelia
California bluebell, phacelia
- Height 9 in (23 cm)
- Planting distance 6 in (15 cm)
- Flowers early summer to early fall; winter or spring in Deep South
- Well-drained sandy soil
- Sunny site
- Hardy annual
The intense blue bell-shaped blooms of Phacelia campanularia make this
hardy annual an attractive rock-garden plant or an unusual edging for
beds. The flowers are borne on 9-in (23-cm) high plants with lush green
irregularly toothed leaves. When crushed, the leaves have a strong but
pleasant fragrance. Phacelias bloom from early summer to early fall
where summers are cool, but will bloom in early summer where summers are
hot, except in the Deep South, where they may be grown for winter and
spring bloom. Bees find the blue flowers very attractive.
