The wishbone flower (Torenia fournieri) is named for the shape of the of
the stamens in the throats of its trumpet-shaped flowers. Carried in
profusion all summer, the blooms almost hide the pointed and finely
toothed pale green leaves. Gardeners value the exotic flowers, with
violet-purple lips and throats of lilac-purple with yellow splashes, and
the plant's preference for shade. It is suitable for bedding and makes a
fine container plant. A few seed cultivars are available, including the
small 'Pink Panda,' which grows 4-8 in (10-20 cm) high, with flowers in
a blend of white and cerise-pink.
