(45-75 cm)
- Planting distance 9 in (23 cm)
- Flowers mid- to late summer
- Any good garden soil
- Sheltered, sunny site
- Half-hardy annual
The modest lavender-blue flowers of Trachymene coerulea (syn. Didiscus
caeruleus), the blue laceflower, make a welcome change from the strong,
startling colors characteristic of so many annuals and biennials.
Composed of dainty florets arranged in small round unbels, they resemble
the cushions of the wild Queen Anne's lace. They have a slight scent and
appear from mid- to late summer. The flowers are carried on 11/2-21/2 ft
(45-75 cm) high bushy plants with light green deeply divided, sticky
leaves. Blue laceflowers look their best when grown in groups with other
annuals in a sunny border. Their long, stiff stems make them good for
cutting.
