Only on species of true amaryllis, Amaryllis belladonna, grows outdoors
in most of North America. it saves its magnificent display of fragrant
satiny pink flowers until early fall, after summer has withered the
foliage, but don't create too much shade. Cultivars with pure white or
purplish blossoms (typically with yellow throats) exist, but they are
hard to find.
