There are few more majestic sights than the giant lily (Cardiocrinum
giganteum) raising its robust 6-10 ft (180-300 cm) tall flower stems
topped with clusters of long trumpet flowers in mid- and late summer.
The fragrant blossoms are creamy white, streaked with purple or crimson
inside their trumpets, and up to 6 in (15 cm) long. The dark green
heart-shaped leaves are equally impressive - as much as 20 in (50 cm)
long and arranged in a spiral along the flower stem. Giant lily is
monocarpic, which means that it dies after flowering. However it leaves
behind two or more offset bulbs, which reach flowering size after about
3 years.
