The large-flowered Dutch hyacinths have mostly replaced the wild
species, Hyacinthus orientalis. They have deliciously scented spikes of
flowers, making them popular for window boxes and containers in late
winter and early spring, or for beds in sunny formal borders in late
spring. The compact flowers, on stems 9-12 in (23-30 cm) high, bloom
from late winter until late spring. A substantial number of Dutch
hyacinth cultivars are available. Early-flowering garden cultivars
include 'Jan Bos' (red) and 'Pink Pearl' (pink). Popular midseason
cultivars include 'Blue Jacket,' 'Delft Blue,' 'Lady Derby' (pink), and
'Ostara'(blue). Late-season cultivars are 'Carnegie' (white) and 'City
of Haarlem' (yellow).
