The species and hybrids in this section of the rhizomatous beardless
iris group are hardy and easy to cultivate, provided the soil is
moisture retentive. Grow them in herbaceous borders for garden
decoration and cutting, or along the edges of garden ponds. A sunny site
is preferable, but these summer-flowering irises will tolerate very
light shade as well.
Popular species and cultivars
Iris sibirica flowers in shades of blue with white veins on the falls.
It is 24-44 in (60-110 cm) high, with a well-branched stem. Plant the
rhizomes 2 ft (60 cm) apart. Hybrids come in shades of blue or white and
have larger flowers. The plants reach 3 ft (90 cm) high and have less
branching habit. Set the rhizomes 11/2-2 ft (45-60 cm) apart.
