The South African Sparaxis tricolor likes the climates of southern California and the Southwest. Because it requires dry soil when it is dormant, harlequin flower aids water conservation. Excellent for cutting, the flowers come in bright reds, purples, yellow, and white, and the corms are usually sold mixed.
