This genus of crocus look-alikes produces brilliant yellow goblet-shaped
flowers in fall. In the wild these small plants grow in sunny rock
crevices and scorched scrubland. In the garden they need a sheltered,
sunny spot such as the foot of a south-facing wall. Sternbergia lutea is
the only widely available species grown outdoors. It has golden yellow
flowers on short stems in early fall and midfall.
