Poisonous Plants

Teach children not to pick or eat any berries, seeds, leaves, or flowers unless they are known to be harmless. The following plants are toxic - some causing stomachache, others being deadly - so do not eat any part:

Autumn crocuses (Colchicum species)

Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)

Boxwoods (Buxus species)

Buttercups (Ranunculus species)

Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus)

Columbines (Aquilegia species)

Daffodils (Narcissus species - bulbs are toxic)

Daturas (Datura species)

Foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea)

Hemlocks (Conicum species)

Hollis (Ilex species)

Ivies (Hedera species)

Larkspurs (Delphinium species)

Lilies of the valley (Convallaria majalis)

Lupines (Lupinus species)

Monkshoods (Aconitum species)

Nightshade (Solanum species - unripe berries are highly toxic)

Oleander (Nerium oleander - all parts are highly toxic)

Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana)

Potatoes (only green tubers, leaves and fruits are toxic)

Privets (Ligustrum ovalifolium)

Rhubarb (Rheum - leaves only)

Spindlebush (Euonymus europaeus)

Spurges (Euphorbia species)

Sumacs (Rhus species)

Sweet peas (Lathyrus species)

Tomatoes (leaves and stems only)

Wisteria (beanlike seeds are toxic)

Yews (Taxus species)
